Vehicle Exhaust Fume

Hazards

Vehicle exhaust fumes can irritate the eyes and respiratory tract, and are a risk to health by breathing in. Carbon-fuelled engine fumes contain carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas. Prolonged exposure to diesel fumes, especially blue or black smoke, may lead to coughing and breathlessness. Long-term repeated exposure to diesel fumes over a period of about 20 years may increase the risk of lung cancer.

Detailed information on the risks associated with vehicle exhaust fume can be found on the relevant section of the Health and Safety Executive's web site.

Controlling Vehicle Exhaust Fume

MG 6150Vehicle exhaust fume is typically controlled by attaching an extract hose to the exhaust pipe of the vehicle.  Extract hoses can be on retractable reels or suspended from the duct work by spring balancing mechanisms.

The extract flow rate requirements vary depending on the size of the vehicle.  Typical extraction rates specified by manufacturers are as follows.
